PE

PE – Curriculum Information
PE and physical activity is a big part of our everyday routine at Wansbeck. Each class has two hours of PE scheduled into their weekly timetable. During these sessions, our children are taught fundamental movement skills across games, gymnastics, dance and OAA as well as a variety of life skills through engaging and challenging activities.
Personal skills are developed through manging the emotions associated with victory and defeat and how to respond appropriately.
Social skills are enhanced through team activities and teaching pupils how to respond to feedback in a positive way as well as how to lead others successfully.
Cognitive skills are built upon through self-exploration of own performance and working through tactics in game situations. These skills and tactics are revisited each year and are built upon to extend learning.
Physical skills are developed by focusing on the fundamental motor skills needed to participate in sport during foundation stage and lower key stage 1. This enables children to have more confidence to explore specific sports when they enter KS2. This allows them to access a wide range of sports that require a broad range of skills.
Finally, health and fitness is taught through understanding the need for and benefits of exercise. This is developed further during PSHE sessions.
We are also encouraging our children to develop these key sport and life skills during ‘inhouse’ sports tournaments on TEAMs day. These sports tournaments help develop the children’s sporting skills, encourage physical activity, and promote an overall enjoyment of taking part in sport.
